In the rental industry the fine print to the rental agreement could generally be summarised thus: "the client is to return the rental vehicle in the same condition as originally supplied, fair wear and tear being the only exception - any damage or breakage is to be paid for by the client, up to the level of the excess". The condition of the vehicle at the time of handover to the client is generally noted on the rental agreement using vehicle illustrations for this purpose.

While the vehicle and equipment illustrations to our damage report are far more comprehensive than most, this system is not perfect. Invariably when a vehicle is returned with damage a discussion arises with the client as to whether or not the damage was pre-existing. For unscrupulous firms with substandard paperwork this system forms the basis for 'inventing' damage and overcharging of the client upon return.
