Click here for details of our one way trailer rentals.

GTM: Gross trailer mass, i.e. the total legal weight of the trailer including its payload, as set by the trailer manufacturer.
TARE: The actual weight of the trailer when empty.
PAYLOAD: The allowable load the trailer can carry
i.e. GTM – TARE = PAYLOAD
SINGLE AXLE: The trailer has only one axle (two wheels).
TANDEM AXLE: The trailer has two axles (four wheels).

What size tow ball do I require to connect to your trailer?

a.gif (235 bytes) 50mm – this size ball has been the standard in Australia for many years. NOTE: By law the size of the tow ball and its rated capacity must be stamped onto the fitting by its manufacturer.

Do I need an adapter to hook up the trailers’ electrics to my tow vehicle?
a.gif (235 bytes) No – we keep a variety of adapters on hand.

Do I need an electric trailer braking system fitted to my vehicle to tow one of your trailers?

a.gif (235 bytes) No. The braking systems to our trailers (if fitted) will be one of the following , both of which operate independently of the tow vehicle:

OVERRIDE BRAKES:
The tow coupling to the trailer has a sliding shaft which is moved by inertia when the tow vehicle applies its brakes – the sliding shaft in turn applies the trailer brakes. TO REVERSE the trailer it is essential to flip over (by hand) a small tongue on the tow coupling, which prevents the sliding shaft from sliding and applying the brakes.

ELECTRIC BRAKES:
As the name implies the trailer brakes are activated by electric signal from the tow vehicle (by the same signal that lights up the stop lights). With our rental trailers that are fitted with electric brakes the signal is delivered to the trailer via the electric lead, to an adjustable brake controller mounted on the draw bar. The actual brake mechanism in the wheels of the trailer are also electric, using magnets to activate the brake shoes – the adjustable brake controller to the drawbar allows the driver to dial in how hard the trailer brakes apply themselves.

How big a trailer can I tow with my vehicle?

a.gif (235 bytes) The legal maximum gross trailer weight able to be towed by the tow vehicle is the lowest denominator to the following criteria:
  1. The towing capacity of the vehicle as set by the manufacturer, for braked and unbraked trailers.
  2. The capacity of the towbar as determined by its manufacturer – since 1988 it has been mandatory for this information to be included onto towbars for cars and light commercials.
  3. The rated capacity of the towball, which by law must be stamped onto the ball by the manufacturer (along with its size).
  4. Whether the trailer is fitted with brakes or not – the difference is rather dramatic! For example a heavy 4WD might have a manufacturers recommended towing capacity of 2500kg for braked trailers, but only 750 kg for unbraked trailers.
  5. State government towing regulations which currently vary from state to state.

Keeping in mind the above criteria, the following table is for use as a guide only:

TOW VEHICLE TRAILER TYPE
4 cylinder car
Light 4WD's
Small utes up to 2.0L
Single axle
6 to 8 Cyl Cars
2 & 4WD utilities with engines 2.4L+
Larger 4WD's
